description

The aim of this project was to develop a personal tea set that would expand the way we talk about sustainability in product design. This product is sustainable in a way that helps preserve and expand upon the diminishing presence of tea culture in addition to saving energy and waste which is our traditional way of looking at sustainability in product design.

role

Industrial Design, Prototyping, Visualization

notes

Received honorable mention in the International Housewares Association student competition.

cultural sustainability

Tea culture use to be about the shared experience and ceremony but now more and more people are just looking for the quickest way to fix themselves a single serving of tea. Is there a way to create a ceremonial experience for a single serving of tea that transcends through different cultures?

environmental sustainability

This TED talk given by Leyla Acaroglu, quoted below, is what sparked the creation of this project. She discuses how we are wasting huge amounts of energy simply by over filling our kettles. I knew from then on that my design would have to figure out a way to make sure that the user is only heating the amount that they are actually going to drink.

"In one day of extra energy use from boiling kettles is enough to light all of the streetlights in England for a night....65% of Brits admit to over-filling their kettle when they only need one cup of tea. All of this extra water that’s being boiled requires energy"

These three rings are used to make sure the water is at the right temperature for steeping your tea. They are liquid crystal thermometers which change to a specific color once the proper temperature is reached.

The tea vessel opens when picked up and closes once placed back down. This is for convenience and to keep the tea fresh. There is also an interchangeable colored ring to signify what tea is in the vessel and correlates to the colored thermometer shown above. The clear tube seen once the vessel is lifted shows the user when they are running low on tea.
